As a survivor of the civil war in Liberia and seeing the devastating aftermath, I decided to (Problem statement) build wellness centers that provides trauma therapy to those civil wars survivors who are living in underserved populations and are still struggling with Long-term Posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) also known as Complex PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Complex PTSD causes are childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse, torture, sex trafficking and war. Also, difficulty controlling your emotions, feeling very angry or distrustful towards the world is a few more causes. All things experienced by some of the survivors of the civil war (NHS, 2022). With all these things mentioned, finding a balance without losing focus on topic was the challenge. I understand now, but suggestions are welcome.

Describe your problem statement revision process. 

Although cohesive, I am doing my best to figure out a way where the focus of the topic is not lost within the description. With Wellness center, Trauma therapy and CPTSD being mentioned, it could cause the confusion of “what is her focus or actual topic?” During the revision process, the focus was fine-tuning the problem statement where all things mentioned were cohesive. The main topic and research is CPTSD and helping those struggling with it. The wellness centers and trauma therapy are treatments that will help those struggling with CPTSD. Understanding this has helped my revision process tremendously.

The problem statement and question

The transition from military service back to civilian life brings with it mental health issues unique to veterans. New experimental Horse Therapy (HT) treatments for veterans with PTSD have shown some success, there is no information on large-scale treatment and more comprehensive research needs to occur to help veterans overcome these issues and improve their future in society. My question is, how can I improve this problem statement?

The problem statement revision process

Although some institutions might require additional elements in a problem statement, there are three essential parts of a problem statement: The research problem itself, for whom and why studying the problem is important, and how the current study will address the problem (Burkholder, 2020). I simply tried to follow these elements and align them with my purpose statement. Here is the problem statement before revision, followed by the revision problem statement.

The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine the results of EAT on veterans and military families. A large-scale open trial of several US EAT organizations will be conducted and surveys and questionnaire tabulations will benefit veterans’ transition into a civilian lifestyle.
