There are many different ways that teachers can create positive relationships with their students and the parents of students. One way is by contacting the parents with good news on a regular basis. Teachers do not only need to call home or try to reach out to parents when there are difficulties with a student, but should do so more often with good news. This gives the student more confidence in themselves and even helps to create a positive relationship with the student’s parents as well. Second, teachers can utilize registration time to build a foundation with their parents and students. By inviting parents into the classroom during registration, teachers can prepare a power point to help illustrate who they are by including their experience, education and some about themselves. In the powerpoint, teachers can also include their email address, work phone number and how the classroom will be run. This provides students and their parents insight on how the class will be run and what is to be expected and can be expected throughout the year. A third way that is beneficial for teachers to create a positive relationship with their students is by providing students with assignments where they can share their experiences and interests. This makes the assignment fun and enjoyable for everyone and not just a select few. Students will be more willing to participate in class work and look forward to coming to school.
One way that I plan to reach out to students and their parents is by utilizing technology as often as possible. Parents can be extremely busy with work and their home life. By using technology such as emails, websites which can include important numbers, grades, instructions for assignments and even group work that has been done. Keeping in contact with parents and having an open door policy for parents and students alike will also help everyone stay on the same page and help to prevent any sort of misunderstandings. Communicating with parents is very important and will help students and their parents feel as though you are on their side when it comes to the student’s education.
