Identify two individuals that you personally know, that you consider to be an ideal or great leader. This leader can be a personal or professional contact and have a formal or informal leadership position. Interview these two leaders by asking them the following questions:
- What are the skills that are most useful to you as a leader and why?
- How did you develop these skills?
- What has been the most meaningful experience, that influenced you as a leader and why?
- How are you motivated?
- How do you motivate?
- What has been the most challenging organizational situation you have been face with in your career to date?
- What is the name of the last inspirational book you have read?
- What advice would you give to someone like me who is on their own organizational and leadership journey?
- Who are some examples you look up to as great leaders and why?
In addition to the above listed questions, you can add any others that you think add to the richness of your understanding of leadership development.
The most powerful interaction is conducting a face to face interview but you can use your discretion what works best for you. However, to get the most out of the interviews a face to face or phone interview might work best. Before the interview explain what, the interview is for and ask them for permission to share the information they provide with the class.
Prepare a brief presentation of the leaders and the interview results, including your main ‘take-aways’ from the interviews. What are the lessons learned and has this created more questions for you around leading others? How has this changed your thoughts on leadership? What was significant about the persons journey? You can make a movie, use powerpoint, presi, powtoon, a cartoon or any other creative form you like. Be creative! You will present your work to the class and you will be asked to give feedback and ask questions of your peer’s presentation. Following are some guidelines for giving feedback or making comments to your peers on their work:
